Rising from the Zuerisee

2021

site-specific performance

3 brooms, 3 stick horses, voice amplifier with headset

30 mins

Wearing hiking boots and a headset, a tour guide leads her group around Sechseläutenplatz, Switzerland's second biggest urban public square, enthusiastically
recounting its riveting past. Real facts begin to mix with an invented narrative: the
pile dwellings become a metropolis, the footbridge a whale fossil, and and witches
on their brooms join the guild members riding around the Böögg. With embarrassingly
amusing, interactive games, the audience is allowed to get to know a new,
almost true side of Zurich.

The burning of the Böögg is a tradition in Zurich going back to
the beginning of the 20th century, celebrating the start of spring.

During this ritual, guild members will ride around the Böögg. Anyone

who is not a man is strictly forbidden from joining a guild.
